Highlights of the Kuala Lumpur 98-XVI Commonwealth Games
Kuala Lumpur is the first Asian city to host the Commonwealth Games. This glorious event brings together 6,000 athletes and officials from 69 Commonwealth nations.
The Games is held form 11-21 September 1998 and staged at 26 venues around Kuala Lumpur and the Langkawi Island.
For the first time in the history of the Games, team sports such as netball, cricket, rugby and hockey (men and women) are being introduced. This is in addition to 11 other sporting events, lawn bowls, shooting, squash, swimming, tenpin bowling and weightlifting.
In conjunction with 1998-Year of Sports and Recreation, the Malaysian Government declared the Games a National Event.

This RM50 polymer banknote is issued to commemorate a special event-the Kuala Lumpur 98-XVI Commonwealth Games, a landmark sporting event in Malaysia. The banknote released by Bank Negara Malaysia in cooperation with SUKOM NINETY EIGHT BERHAD is more than a commemorative token. It is a collector’s item that will serve to remind the world of Malaysia as a world class sporting destination. This banknote has been produced in limited.
SIGNIFICANCE OF ISSUE
This RM50 commemorative banknote is the first polymer banknote issued by Bank Negara Malaysia.

Front
The design motifs on the front side feature the portrait of the first Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong on the right and the Kuala Lumpur city skyline with prominent landmarks in the centre. The Commonwealth Games Look Programme which features the stylized butterfly symbol and the gold-coloured Optical Varialble Device (OVD) with the portrait of the first Yang di-Pertuan Agong in the clear window appear on the left. The logo of Bank Negara Malaysia appears in the other clear window on the right of the note. The Kuala Lumpur International Airport is featured as the central backdrop. To the right, the background design shows the artist’s impression of the Multimedia Super Corridor connecting Kuala Lumpur city to Putrajaya, Cyberjaya and the new Kuala lumpur International Airport.
Back
The back design shows the Stadium Utama Bukit Jalil in the centre. The logo of Kuala Lumpur 98-XVI Commonwealth Games appears on the left of the note.
