Endangered Animal Species 2003-Part 2

Malayan Tapir

Tapirs are found in lowland areas in the dry season and will migrate into mountainous areas during the rainy season. All tapirs are good climbers and swimmers. Tapirs have been regarded as one of the more primitive mammals. Their distribution covers Thailand, Myanmar, Indochina, Indonesia (Sumatra) and Peninsular Malaysia. Destruction of habitat and hunting in some countries have contributed to the decline in tapir population in the region.

Serow

They can be found in Indonesia (Sumatra), Peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Indochina, Southern China, India (Assam to Himalayas, Kashmir and Punjab). Poaching and habitat destruction have resulted in the endangered status of this animal.

Gaur

The opening up of lowland forests has resulted in the shrinking of the animal's habitat and has exposed the animals to poaching, thus endangering the population.

Sambar Deer

The sambar deer is the largest deer in Southeast Asia. They have coarse hair with large antlers. The sambar deer is commonly found in most parts of Asia, from Sri Lanka and Southern India up to Nepal, through Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

Clouded Leopard

Clouded leopard are found in Nepal, Sikkim, Southern China, Taiwan, Indochina, Peninsular Malaysia, Indonesia and Borneo. The loss of habitat from deforestation also resulted in the animal becoming endangered species.

Proboscis Monkey

This unusual monkey is threatened with extinction owing to a loss of habitat and hunting. Their habitat is under severe threat from logging and land clearing for plantations.
